LEESBURG – Pop Warner League’s football teams and their cheerleaders posed for a photograph for The Orlando Times newspaper after receiving their medals at Leesburg Recreation Center’s annual Award Celebration Ceremony Sunday, November 5th, 2023 at the city’s Aquatic Center, located at 302 Pine Street, Leesburg, Florida 34748.
Sponsored by the Leesburg Recreation Center on Griffin Road, the youth, their parents and siblings had a great time swimming and playing football in the Olympic sized pool with a water slide and snacking on franks, hamburgers, and pizza or just relaxing and talking at the picnic tables at the end of the football season event.
While the football teams didn’t place this season, all five cheerleaders’ teams: Tiny Mites, Mighty Mites, Peewees, Junior Varsity and the Varsity did their thing. They placed first in the hip hop division, and will be competing at the regionals during Thanksgiving weekend in Kissimmee, Florida.
“The best and most satisfying thing about the event was seeing the players, their siblings getting to enjoy our Aquatic Center, which is a testament to the City’s commitment to our youth,” said Marcus Niblack, Recreation Department Manager. “We ended the season on a non-football note. It was fun, and it was beautiful.”
The Recreation Department sponsors teams for flag football, basketball, soccer, and kickball for youth and adults, baseball teams only register youth. Volunteers are needed for coaching and becoming Team Moms.
