ORLANDO – The brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Delta Xi Lambda Chapter in partnership with the Hankins Johnson Foundation sponsored the Annual Belford V. Lawson Oratorical competition on February 25th at St John Baptist Church, Orlando.  Seven participants were selected from all the applicants to participate in the final competition.  We had one middle school student, and 6 high school students from the Young Men of Distinction (YMOD) mentoring program participate.  Speeches were evaluated on content, delivery, and language. The topic was “Social Media and its effects on Black youth.” It was a competitive event. All participants were well prepared and delivered outstanding presentations. In the end, the top three students received trophies, cash awards along with new laptops. Our 3rd place winner, Caleb Windbish is a 16-year-old at Orlando Christian Prep received $100.  Javon Bertin-Maurice is a 16-year-old West Orange High School took 2nd and received $300. Jayci Massey is a 13-year-old at Ocoee Middle School took the top spot and received $500.  Brother Alexander Smith-Johnson, Chairman for the event plans to continue expanding the program next year.  According to Smith-Johnson the students participated in a number of prep sessions and the competition reflected the work the kids put in to perform so well.
