KISSIMMEE – The Atlantic hurricane season officially runs from June 1 to November 30, so it is important for families and residents to prepare ahead of time. The City aims to equip residents with the tools they need to protect themselves, their families, and their homes.
Residents are encouraged to take advantage of two types of emergency notifications offered by the City:
- General Emergency Messages: Signing up for the city’s emergency notification system enables residents to receive critical updates and alerts. To subscribe, individuals can text “KISSIMMEE” to 888777.
- Location-Based Messages: Residents can receive location-specific alerts for up to five addresses via text message, phone call, or email. This service can be accessed through Kissimmee.gov/AlertKissimmee. Existing account holders can modify their settings by logging in.
To support residents in their preparedness efforts, the City emphasizes the importance of these essential steps:
- Checklist Creation: Compile a checklist outlining essential tasks for preparing your home and properties ahead of potential storms.
- Storm Supplies: Stocking up on emergency supplies is essential. Each household’s hurricane preparedness kit should include non-perishable food, water, medications, coolers, flashlights, batteries, and first aid supplies.
- Evacuation Planning: Familiarize yourself with designated evacuation routes in Kissimmee and develop a family evacuation plan. Identify a secure destination and locate nearby shelters in case of evacuation orders.
- Home Protection: Protect your home proactively, secure outdoor furniture and equipment, and trim trees and shrubs to minimize debris risks during high winds.
- Stay Informed: Monitor the latest weather forecasts and advisories from the National Weather Service, local news outlets, and official city channels for updates on storm developments and emergency directives.
Residents are encouraged to utilize Florida’s Hurricane Preparedness Tax-Free Weeks during the initial two weeks of June to procure essential supplies and fortify their homes and families against potential storms.
City Manager Mike Steigerwald emphasizes the importance of preparedness: “While we hope for the best, it’s crucial that residents in our community are prepared for potential storms. By taking proactive measures now, we can mitigate risks and help ensure the safety and well-being of our community.”
