LEESBURG – Acting, singing, dancing and showing their grasp of basic facts about Black History, about forty kids, ages 3 to 5 years – olds impressively owned their Black History Month Program titled “United We Stand” Friday evening, February 12, 2024 at Venetian Center in Leesburg, Florida.
Attired in black T-shirts that alluded to some aspect of Black History, the Black heritage or lineage, the confident and diverse children representing five Kids of Distinction’s, childcare centers educated and entertained the audience of parents, grandparents, siblings, loved ones and supporters.
“OMG, I was so proud of our children’s’ speeches,” stated Constance Christian, Co-Pastor Christian Worship Center (CWC). “Our children showed their parents and all who attended how intelligent they are and can be. Hats go off to the teachers and parents, who made this very nice program a reality.”
Life sized statues of former President Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama, Harriet Tubman, and Rosa Parks, and the Museum of Black History, which was composed of informative displays describing Black pioneers, inventors, Pastor John Christian, and more provided a great opportunity to learn about the heritage of Black people.
Director of Childcare, Nakia Myles, said she was very impressed with how well the children were able to correctly recite quotes from various Black pioneers, and the various table displays with its key information about Black History.
The entire program was a learning experience for some parents who were heard saying, “I didn’t know that,” after a child had recited something from a Black pioneer or leader like Malcolm X, Rosa Parks, or Dr. Martin L. King, Jr.
The very successful and well attended program ended with a soul food dinner of fried chicken, string beans, macaroni and cheese, and drink.
“What a great night for watching our children proudly display their knowledge of diversity, unity, and our heritage”, concluded Nakia Myles, Director of Childcare.
