BY CHRISTINA FORREST, 1ST VICE PRESIDENT, DBCFlorida
“The Democratic Black Caucus of Florida (DBCFlorida), the Black political organization which represents almost 2 million Black voters in the sunshine state of Florida, enthusiastically endorses Vice President Kamala Harris for President of the United States,” revealed DBCFlorida President Trevor Mallory on Tuesday, July 30th, 2024.
“Our Vice President is the most qualified person to be the next President of the United States. Kamala Harris, the soon to be official Democratic nominee for President of the United States, does not need cliff notes on the issues affecting our community. Vice President Harris has visited Florida twelve times and supported Black Floridians when we fought against Governor Ron DeSantis’ destructive policies and attacks against Black and Brown people, like trying to whitewash Black History.” President Mallory said.
“Vice President Harris has continuously shown her support for reproductive rights and bodily autonomy; she is one of the few in power to use her platform to raise awareness of the high maternal mortality rate among Black Women”, stressed President Mallory. “Vice President Harris has fought for improved infrastructure, addressed environmental racism, healthcare access, education, criminal justice reform, homeownership, and supported entrepreneurs and small businesses”, emphasized President Mallory, while he highlighted that none of these items existed on the Republicans’ agenda.
President Mallory said the DBCFlorida is proud of Vice President Harris’ work in the Senate, where she authored or co-authored significant legislation such as the Justice in Policing Act, the Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment Act and Expungement (MORE) Act, the Access to Council Act, a Lift Middle-Class Act, the Justice for Victims of Lynching Act, and her unwavering advocacy for Voting Rights.
“A proud graduate of Howard University, Vice President Harris has always had a heartfelt interest for HBCU’s”, President Mallory said. “Notably, she co-sponsored the Fostering Undergraduate Talent by Unlocking Resources for Education (FUTURE) Act, which permanently funded HBCUs and other Minority-Serving Institutions (MSIs). This legislation provides crucial financial support to HBCUs and helps ensure that students attending these institutions have access to quality education.”
“On the International front Vice President Kamala Harris has shown her ability to appropriately and skillfully deal abroad. Her diplomatic initiatives were historic in bridging gaps with African Nations and Leaders.” President Mallory said.
In 2023, VP Harris returned to Africa, visiting three different countries, where she met with forty-nine African Leaders. In the end, positive relationships were fostered among the US and African countries, which mutually benefited economies for all nations involved.
“The DBCFlorida’s aforementioned statements are more than enough to qualify the DBCFlorida’s endorsement of Vice President Harris for President of the United States,” President Mallory remarked. “However, to quantify our compassionate support for Vice President Harris’ endeavor to become President, our last two paragraphs substantiate our personal reasons.”
“Vice President Harris embodies the values and principles that the Democratic Black Caucus of Florida holds dear,” reiterated President Mallory. “She’s a fighter with an inclusive leadership style which connects with people from all walks of life. Vice President Harris is an exceptional candidate for President of the United States who will unite our divided nation and work towards strengthening America for all.”
Concluding, President Mallory said, “DBCFlorida encourages everyone who knows and believes our democracy is at stake in this election to unite and stand with the Democratic National Party in solidarity and work to elect Kamala Harris for President.”
We can win this election. We will win this election because in the words of Vice President Harris: “This is a peoples’ powered campaign! When we vote, we win!”
