Dorothy Turner Johnson Branch to host Dr. Carter G. Woodson Birthday Celebration

ORLANDO – The Dorothy Turner Johnson Branch (DTJ) of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) will host its annual Dr. Carter G. Woodson Birthday Celebration. The celebration is scheduled for December 22nd, 2024 from 3:00 to 4:30pm.  Join us at Mt. Zion Missionary Institution Baptist Church, located at 535 West Washington St., Orlando, Florida 32801.

Dr. Woodson is known as the “Father of Black history”.  In tribute to Dr. Woodson, Manuel Jones (President of the Dorothy Turner Johnson Branch) will share “The Man, His Legacy, and the current Relevancy”.

In 1933, Dr. Woodson published “The Mis-Education of the Negro,” a collection of articles and speeches. The book would become a classic, advocating for excellence in the education of Black students and demanding that school systems across America correct curriculums designed to deliberately “mis-educate” Black children and promote the fallacy of white supremacy.

If we look at the current state of Black History and the laws which have been changed recently to prohibit the teaching of Black History, there are parallels to the times which “The Mis-Education of the Negro,” was written.

As we close out 2024, please join us for this festive celebration to discuss one of Black History’s most prominent influencers.
